Back it up: Update!

Did you get a Drobo? If not, what are you waiting for? Get one - it’s one of the best purchases you can make! And while you do, you may also want to check into ioSafe: a new breed of data storage systems that are designed to protect digital files against fire and water damage. The ioSafe Solo can survive 30mins in 1550° heat (the average house fire is around 800°) and 3 days submerged in 10ft deep water. That’s pretty impressive.

Jayse and I are unimpressed with Mozy as of recent. It’s just too slow for the large amount of data that we typically use it for. So having solved one of the main issues of keeping your files on-location, we may be getting a couple of these to use along with Time Machine to back up our computers. And of course, I’ll still be using Pictage for an extra safe off-site back-up of all my client files.

July 15, 2009 - 9:38 pm Chris - So,, what do we go with? Drobo? or IoSafe? Hmmmmm,, Or,,, you could drill a couple holes in a fireproof safe to run the cables and then seal them with Fireproof chalk, like the do in commercial buildings,, then,,, Create a vent system with a bi-metallic valve that shuts off when the temp reaches "DANGER" Levels,, and make your own, Drobo Hybrid, fire-safe hard drives! Damn! but what about if it gets dropped in water?,,, I'll have to work on that one... Something about floaties is coming to mind...

July 15, 2009 - 10:17 pm Chels - BOTH! Drobo as the main backup and working drive (mostly for client files). The ioSafe synced up with TimeMachine to back up any current data, etc. Jayse and I both got our ioSafes in the mail today. So far they ROCK! Remind me at the next PUG and you can check them out. :)

July 15, 2009 - 10:19 pm Chels - And as for a fire & waterproof Drobo... That would be killer!!
